Thank you for sharing your struggle in such a deeply thoughtful and real way. I hope we can all learn to show up better for those who may live differently than ourselves because you never know the depth of struggle someone may be having. You didn’t give up and explored all the things you felt may help you know yourself and your beliefs better, that takes courage! Most people don’t do what you did because it’s too hard, they’re scared or too stuck in their ways. I hope many people read this!
This is so thoughtfully and beautifully written. It's so surprising to see that you feel that you failed as a vegan on the raft. I feel like it's only human nature to question our moral compasses at times, even when they're pointing us in the right direction. I think one of the most beautiful things about being a human is our ability to think about why we do or don't do the things we do, and you are absolutely entitled to moments where you're unsure of your path. I am so so proud of you for going into a closed environment with people who don't share our beliefs against eating animals, finding compromise and putting aside any differences to work as a team, questioning your own resolve in your moral journey, and working through them in a way that left you victorious both over the competition and your own doubts, insecurities, and struggles. I feel like that is the absolute epitome of strength, and you 100% didn't "fail your mission," you just allowed yourself to experience the sometimes painful experience of being a human.
I've been struggling too with certain parts of the vegan lifestyle in ways that it wasn't difficult before. Working in fashion and beauty, it's so hard to avoid products that were unethically sourced or missed the cruelty-free mark. I've found myself slipping up in some of my purchases, and I spend forever feeling like absolute shit about it. It's so hard, and I want you to know that you aren't alone. After what seems like never-ending therapy, I've found that it's not about being a perfect vegan or some sort of God-like being that has been sent on this planet to set an example for everyone else to follow. It's about just waking up and doing the best we can, knowing that our best is fluid, and somedays my best is better than others.
You are a beautiful, compassionate, and sensitive person, and I am so proud and thankful to have earned the privilege of being your friend. Try to give yourself a little bit of grace. You deserve a break and tbh sis you've got enough unnecessary haters out there...you definitely don't need to add yourself to that list #notmymissmontana ;). You are amazing. You are gifted. And you have made an insurmountable impact on the people and animals who are around you. Think about the number of people you've even just briefly engaged in areas concerning animal cruelty. Those small moments become deep thoughts and those deep thoughts become actions. Super proud of you, my dear. You got this!
Fortunately, I have been lucky enough to find a partner who is kind and compassionate to all of my choices :)
